Principles of Touchscreen Technology

 

 

The functionality of touchscreens primarily relies on various types of sensor technologies, including infrared, resistive, surface acoustic wave, and capacitive touchscreens. Below is a detailed explanation of the principles behind these different types of touchscreens:

 

Infrared Touchscreen Technology
Infrared touchscreens work by installing a circuit board frame around the display. This frame houses infrared emitters and receivers arranged along the edges of the screen, forming a grid of intersecting infrared beams. When a user touches the screen, their finger blocks the horizontal and vertical beams at that specific point, allowing the system to determine the touch location. Any object that disrupts the infrared beams at the intersection can trigger the touchscreen's operation.

 

Resistive Touchscreen Technology
Resistive touchscreens function through changes in electrical resistance between two conductive layers. When the screen is touched, the two layers come into contact, causing a change in resistance at the point of touch. The touchscreen detects this change in resistance and uses it to determine the touch position, which is then relayed to the electronic device. The structure of a resistive touchscreen typically includes a hard-coated surface layer, a glass substrate, transparent spacer dots, an ITO (Indium Tin Oxide) conductive layer, and a PET (Polyester Film) layer.

 

Capacitive Touchscreen Technology
Capacitive touchscreens operate based on the electrical properties of the human body. The screen is a composite glass panel with four layers, including an ITO layer coated on both the inner surface and the interlayer, with a thin layer of silicon dioxide glass as the protective outer layer. When a finger touches the metal layer, it creates a coupling capacitance between the user and the touchscreen surface due to the human body's electric field. This allows a small current to flow from the touch point. The current is drawn from the electrodes at the four corners of the touchscreen, with the current from each electrode being proportional to the distance from the touch point. The controller then calculates the touch location by precisely measuring these current ratios.
